John Robert Shewan

John Robert Shewan, of Gatesville, Texas, and formally from Porter, Indiana, went into eternal life on November 21, 2013 at his daughter's residence in Gatesville after a year long battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family as The Lord released him from his earthbound body. He was 76. He was born in Valparaiso, IN on February 28, 1937 to John Shewan and Doris Howard Shewan Stoerck Miller. On March 8, 1958 he married the love of his life, Shirley June Walter in Gary Indiana, and they were married 46 beautiful years before she went to her eternal rest. During his lifetime, he worked at Nipsco as a lineman and dispatcher for 42 years. He also owned a deli in Valparaiso, The Vale of Paradise, for many years. He was a businessman, and entrepreneur, enjoying every new business and edeavor. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, playing the guitar and ukelele. He was talented at making stained glass projects. He graduated as valedictorian at Liberty High School, Class of 1955. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a fair, generous, loving man with a great sense of humor, and a loving devotion to his family. In May, 2006, he met Alice Kennedy, who became his beloved companion for the rest of life. Together they relished life and joyfully traveled to Germany, Ireland, the Phillipines, Belize, Mexico, and the Carribean Islands. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Bernice Clevenger Shewan, his wife Shirley, and his brother Phil Stoerck. He is survived by his precious companion, Alice Kennedy of Gatesville, and his devoted sister, Kathy De Wees of Rensselaer, Indiana, and sister-in-law Bonnie Stoerck. Also surviving are his two beloved daughters, Lori McConville and husband Ted of Gatesville, TX and Kelly Howard and husband Jeff of Valparaiso, IN. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Danny, Jonathan, and Madison McConville, Noah Gumz, and Blake and Devin Howard. He was Papa John to grandchildren Anna and Lauren Sweeney, Isaac and Quenton Kennedy, and Aydin and Isabella Mohler. He joyfully embraced as his family Christeena and Jarlath Sweeney, Dale Kennedy, and Ann and Matt Mohler. He also leaves behind nephews Tod DeWeese, Reed Stoerck, and niece Kim Barton.
