IN LOVING MEMORY OF SGM (R) Herbert Bancroft Silvera Jr. September 4, 1948 – April 29, 2026 A Life of Dedicated Service Herbert Bancroft Silvera Jr. passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, at his home in Killeen, Texas, at the age of 77. He crossed the threshold of this life just as he lived it—with quiet dignity, surrounded by the family he adored. In his final moments, his devoted wife, Nannie Clara Silvera, was by his side, sending him off with a tender prayer as he was tucked in for the night. Born on September 4, 1948, in Montclair, New Jersey, Herbert was the beloved son of the late Herbert Bancroft Silvera Sr. and Barbara Louise (Reed) Silvera. Raised with a strong foundation of discipline and family values in Montclair, he carried that deep devotion into a life defined by honor, intellect, and hard work. Growing up, Herbert, aka “Smoochie,” and his brothers spent countless days camping, hunting, and fishing with Uncle Georgie, who was like a second father to them. His love for the outdoors led him to become an Eagle Scout. He loved his time at scout camp so much that even after injuring his hand, he stubbornly refused his family’s pleas to come home early. He attended Glenfield Middle School and could frequently be found at Rand Park playing basketball with his buddies Robbie, the Sterlings, Goodie, Bunyan, and Timmy, along with friends Terry Boggs, Buddy Feggins, Tony Christian, and Grandeson. It was during these years that Clarence Grant taught him how to box—a skill Herbert proudly proved by winning a match against Johnnie Boy Johnson in Glenfield Park. An avid sports enthusiast, he loved watching his favorite football team, the Rams, and shared a passion for bowling with his mother, who played in three leagues. He spent many nights trying to beat his younger brother, Stephen, during games with family and friends at Belclair Lanes. Herbert attended Montclair High School, where he played for the Montclair Eagles football and wrestling teams. After graduating with the Class of 1967, he proudly joined the National Guard, and in 1968, he began an eight-year career with New Jersey Bell. A proud patriot, SGM (R) Herbert B. Silvera Jr. answered the call to duty and dedicated himself to a distinguished career in the United States military, ultimately retiring as a highly respected Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army. His decades of honorable service shaped a man of immense integrity, order, and quiet strength. Following his military retirement, Herbert brought his sharp mind and systematic approach to the field of information technology, earning his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and serving with distinction as the head of IT operations as an Information Technology Specialist at Troy University. But Herbert’s ambition and drive didn't stop there. He was a dynamic businessman and entrepreneur who built a vibrant career in the travel industry and excelled as a network marketer. He loved the freedom and vision of entrepreneurship, using his businesses to connect with people and help others see the world. Herbert lived life fully and embraced his passions with enthusiasm. He was an avid golfer who found peace and camaraderie on the green, and he possessed a deep love for travel, always eager to explore new destinations and create beautiful memories. Closer to home, he poured his heart into his faith and community, finding immense joy in teaching Sunday school, where he shared his wisdom, steady guidance, and love for the Word with the next generation. Family and Legacy Herbert’s greatest treasure was his beautifully blended family, and his legacy of love spans generations. Spouse: He is survived by his loving wife, Nannie Clara Silvera. Children: He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of family from his early life, including his children: Herbert, Tiffanie (Jammal), and Linda. Stepchildren: His beloved stepchildren: Sharon S., Victor R., and Blue W. (Lamont). Grandchildren & Great-Grandchildren: He is the proud and cherished grandfather of Niayla, Nicos, Najhay, Makayla, Allana, Brihanna, Rashan, and Zoe, and two great-grandchildren, leaving behind a rich legacy through many adored step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to his life. Siblings: He is also survived by his siblings: Sharon (Michael), Diane, and Stephen, as well as a host of loving nieces and nephews: Michelle, Jennifer, Tara, Devonne, Scott, Stephen, Anthony, and Janelle, along with their extended families.Reunited in Peace: Herbert was reunited in peace with his parents and his siblings who preceded him in death: Judith, Roger, and Mary. Herbert’s life was defined by the family he adored, the service he rendered to his country, his vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, and his devotion to his faith. His steady hand, brilliant mind, and protective love will be deeply missed and forever celebrated by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
