Luther William Herber

A Good Life Lasts for Generations. Luther William Herber, “Daddy, Pawpaw, Great Pawpaw,” passed away peacefully at home on August 9, 2026, at the age of 93. He has been reunited with his beloved wife, son, parents, siblings, and abundant relatives and friends. He was born October 7, 1932, in Lockney, TX, to a Lutheran minister, Reverend Ewald H. Herber, and a German immigrant mother, Hildegard E. Rauschenbach Herber. He spent his early years in Wilson, TX, and at the age of 14, his family moved to Thrall, TX, where his dad became the pastor at St. John Lutheran Church. After graduating from Thrall High School, he enrolled at Texas Lutheran College in Seguin as a biology major. He joined the Navy where the military recognized his gift for medicine, and he was transferred to the Marine Corps on special assignment where he became a medical corpsman. Upon leaving the military, he returned to Austin and entered the Seton School of X-ray Technology. After completing the two-year course in 1957, he was hired by Seton as a technician. By 1962, he became the Chief X-ray Technician. He was responsible for department and satellite activities at Seton in the OR, Special Procedures, and Nuclear Medicine, receiving one of the first nuclear medicine certifications in the country. He also taught many X-ray students during his time at Seton. For many years, he worked alongside Robert Snider, MD, and their friendship endured for over 70 years. After he retired from Seton, he went to work for Gilbert X-ray, maintaining, repairing, and updating X-ray equipment throughout the Central Texas area. He stayed with Gilbert X-ray until his retirement in 1996. He met his wife of over 60 years, Ruth Irene Wuthrich, in Thrall, TX, and they married on New Year’s Eve in 1955. Together, they raised their family with love and faith in God. Their twin sons, Kevin and Keith, arrived first in 1959, followed by their daughter, Kimberley Dawn, in 1961. Luther was a devoted husband to Ruth and a loving and fun dad to his children. He was a jack-of-all-trades and could make almost anything for them, from a playhouse to a zipline in the backyard to uneven parallel bars made from an old swing set. He absolutely adored his grandchildren, Kasey, Lauren, Shelby, Tyler, and William, and they adored their Pawpaw. He became Great Pawpaw with the birth of his great-grandchildren, Jayme, Evelyn, Carter, and Clayton. Luther was known as Mr. Fix-it, as he could get anything to work—from large mammography units to household appliances, TVs, bicycles, autos, and computers. If it was supposed to run, he could make it run. He would be the person you would want to be stranded with on a desert island or the moon, as he could figure out a way to get you home. It was said that he could fix anything, even though it might not always be pretty. He was a fantastic chef and loved to cook for others. He could go to a restaurant and later recreate the recipe, usually making it tastier and healthier. But his favorite food was sandwiches, of all kinds. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Kati and Mariam; a brother, Harry; his wife, Ruth; and his son, Kevin. He is survived by his son, Keith; daughter, Kim Wicheta and husband Tom; two daughters-in-law, Kim Fair and Rene Herber; three granddaughters, Kasey Diffie (Joe), Lauren Moldenhour (Jeremy), and Shelby Nyland (Cole); grandsons Tyler Cage (Kassidy) and William; and four great-grandchildren, Jayme, Evelyn, Carter, and Clayton. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at SPJST Lodge 29 in Taylor.
